Finding Health Related Information on the Internet
Resources and Links

There is so much health oriented information on the Internet that it would easily fill a book. I'm not really interested in writing one, so I will just chart a few good places to start your search. You might already be aware of some of the general search engines available on the Web such as Yahoo (www.yahoo.com), Excite (www.excite.com) and WebCrawler (www.webcrawler.com). But did you know there are also quite a few health related search sites out there? We're going to explore a few of them.

One of the most advanced health related sites is Medscape® (www.medscape.com). They feature the Web's largest collection of free full-text, peer-reviewed articles, medical news, MEDLINE, and interactive quizzes. Free access to the MEDLINE article database, daily updates to their site, and an e-mail newsletter sent out periodically to inform you of changes make this the first stop in your search for information.

With a name like Achoo (gee, I can't figure out where they got this name from), we think you can guess that they specialize in health issues At web address www.achoo.com, you can search their database of over 8,200 links for anything from blood tests, where you'll find us, to nutritional supplements which would find quite a few companies offering supplements.

Another great starting point is the National Library of Medicine at www.nlm.nih.gov. You can search through their site for publications, disease information, grant and research programs, the MEDLINE database, and more. Some of the database searches have a modest fee. The related National Institutes of Health site (www.nih.gov) contains similar information.

Here are a few other health related possible starting points:

National Institute of Health (NIH) - http://www.nih.gov/
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

Yahoo Health Topics:

Planet WellNess:
www.planetwellness.com
MEDMarket:

SEARCH.COM:

The Life Science Navigator (tm):
www.lifescinav.com

Keep in mind that you will never find a site that contains everything. Some come really close, but the fact is there is too much information out there to be able to keep track of. You will often need to go to several search sites before finding what you are looking for. Sometimes the specialized sites above will have what you need, and you won't have to go through a lot of unrelated information, but other times you'll have to resort to the major search engines (Yahoo, Excite, etc.) since they have the resources to cover more of the web.

One of the most valuable aspects of the internet is the newsgroups. These are public forums where information is constantly exchanged. The major browsers (Netscape and Microsoft) have built-in news readers, and it's a very simple matter to read and post articles in these groups. Check your software help files, and documentation to find out more. Some groups you might find interesting include alt.health, misc.health.alternative and sci.med.nutrition. A very valuable web resource is Deja News (www.dejanews.com) where you can search all of the past articles from all newsgroup postings for a specific keyword, phrase, or author.
