Western civilization has a bit of an ego problem regarding its ability to handle so-called "third world" diseases. We've applauded the ability to fight off diseases like polio, malaria, small pox, diphtheria, cholera, and other varied parasitic, bacterial, and viral diseases. We've forced these crafty microbes to mutate into drug-resistant superpowers with little thought to strengthening the defense structure of the human body, the immune system. According to Laurie Garrett, in an excellent, must read book, "The Coming Plague," the present method of treatment is not only woefully inadequate, but has put the human race in grave danger. As is typical in modern, traditional medical circles, the blame is put on the microbe for daring to mutate, not on the near-sightedness of the drug first, ask questions later mentality. Dr. Garrett has a number of illuminating statements to make but failed to see the potential of these statements. The most important was the following: "Among the cells of the human body most dependent upon a steady source of nutrients are those of the immune system… "
