According to the May 2003 issue of Epidemiology, a link has been found between the urine excretion of phthalates (monobutyl and monobenzyl) and depressed sperm counts. While no direct, causative relationship was proven, the data builds upon a growing mountain of evidence that has been gathering over the past few decades. This study’s biggest impact comes from the fact that it represents the first time that very small amounts of phthalates have been implicated in male infertility.
Phthalates are a common chemical used in numerous consumer products ranging from cosmetics to deodorants, from medical devices to food packaging, and from toys to an aerosol known as new car smell. There are numerous studies that have implicated these chemicals to their interference in the production of sex hormones in animals and their effects on reproduction.
In this study, 168 men had their sperm tested for counts, motility, and shape, while their urine was tested for eight different phthalate compounds. Results showed that 75 percent of the volunteers had five of these compounds in their urine. Furthermore, those tested with the highest concentrations had the lowest sperm count. There was also a similar correlation between monobutyl phthalate concentrations and sperm motility.
Mark Schauss, Carbon Based Corporation’s head of research, has been lecturing on the dangers of phthalates for years. Since, avoidance of phthalates in today’s environment is increasingly difficult if not impossible, improving both phase one and phase two detoxification pathways is critical if you are trying to achieve optimal health and wellness. Our researchers have discovered that one of the ways these toxins can interfere is with the Citric Acid Cycle. Especially in respect to the entry of carbohydrates into this important energy producing cycle.
Using the Urine Organic Acid along with the Amino Acid in Plasma test will give the clinician an important insight into the effect of toxicity and what biochemically individualized nutritional program may be helpful in the detoxification process. These tests by themselves, while helpful in achieving optimal wellness, are greatly enhanced by having the results run through the CellMate Wellness System™. Using a recently developed mathematical algorithm, researchers at Carbon Based have found a way to pinpoint where the disruption in the Citric Acid Cycle is most profound and what has been scientifically shown to be most effective in resolving the imbalances reported.
