According to author Theo Colborn of the University of Florida Department of Zoology, in an article published in the June 2004 issue of Environmental Health Perspectives, “Increases in the prevalence of Neurodevelopmental disorders over the past 30 years make it imperative to reverse this trend. Because it appears that this trend could be partly the result of exposure to environmental contaminants, it is imperative to prevent further exposure to synthetic chemicals that are suspect.” I highly recommend reading this well written and well documented report, http://ehp.niehs.nih.gov/members/2003/6601/6601.pdf.
Many of the chemicals Dr. Colborn discusses in his research and review article are know endocrine disruptors, which can devastatingly interfere with brain development, especially in fetuses. Presently, there are approximately 87,000 chemicals in use with 10 new ones being introduced daily dumping approximately 85 billions pounds into our atmosphere. More shocking are the figures the author presents on the use of herbicides which has been estimated at covering “14% of the land surface of the United States”, 60% of which are known endocrine disruptors. His linking the start of the increased mass-production of synthetic chemicals and neurological and developmental disorders is equally disturbing.
After reading this six page article it becomes apparent that it is important as parents, patients and clinicians we not only make a concerted effort to reduce our own use of these chemicals, we also must determine our own exposures and internal toxic loads. By doing this we can develop intelligent and effective detoxification protocols that address both short and long term ways to protect ourselves from the ravages of our misguided use of synthetic chemicals.
