C-Reactive Protein (C-RP) was first identified in 1930. It was named for its ability to bind the C-polysaccharide from the cell wall of the Pneumococcus bacterium. It belongs to the class of "acute phase reactants" and by 1935 it was shown to have a high correlation with inflammation and with increased erythrocyte sedimentation rates (ESR).
