The question about running a metabolic screening test has come up on occasion. What is deemed to be "metabolic" testing to one clinic is completely different from what another one would. Often times clinics such as the Mayo Clinic, are just trying to look for gross abnormalities such as phenylketanuria (elevated phenylalanine) or other genetic disorders. Their reference ranges are somewhat meaningless because all they look for is the extreme result and they put little credence into non-extreme results.
